Birth is a Life Event, not
I'm Sandra Elkins, I'm a CPM, RN and Texas Licensed Midwife in Amarillo TX. I serve Amarillo and the surrounding area, including Oklahoma, Kansas and I am soon to be licensed in New Mexico!
My first child was born in 1985 and I felt that the medical model of childbirth was seriously lacking in the education they provided to women and the options that were not being offered in a hospital based birth, the atmosphere was impersonal and very medical, yet I had always been told childbirth was natural and normal. Yet at the hospital it was not!
I first become interested in childbirth after my daughter was born, not knowing about midwives, I enrolled at Cameron University In Lawton Oklahoma. I believed if I were a L&D nurse I could make a deference in the lives of women. It would be 13 years and 4 children later when I was called to midwifery. I started doing a self study program and attending home births with another local midwife. When I was 6 months pregnant with my youngest son I moved to El Paso Texas and began a grueling, yet exciting internship at Casa de Nacimiento, I completed the program and became a CPM in 2001. 25 years later I competed my associates degree in nursing, passing the Texas state boards and becoming an RN.
This year I celebrate 20 years as a CPM, 19 years as a Texas Licensed Midwife and 12 years as an RN. I love being a midwife! It is an honor, a huge responsibility, and a true labor of love to serve families and women during such a life changing event.
