Meet Your Midwife
At Panhandle Birth Services in Amarillo, TX, we believe that becoming a mother is one of life's most amazing events. Our goal is to help you explore and consider all your prenatal care and birthing options. While out-of-hospital births may not be right for everyone, they can be a wonderful experience for low-risk women and their babies, often requiring fewer interventions.
Choosing to give birth at home or in a birth center provides the freedom to move, eat, drink, and enjoy the presence of friends and family. Being in a comfortable, familiar environment with known caregivers can significantly enhance the birthing experience.
We encourage parents to explore their options, have access to information, and make decisions based on their needs rather than caregiver bias. This is why we emphasize respectful care and education, helping you make informed decisions with confidence.
Our approach fosters trust in an open, honest, and unbiased atmosphere, ensuring your voice is heard and your needs are met in a safe and healthy environment.
With Panhandle Birth Services, you have the option of a private birth with just your midwife and loved ones or a more supported experience with our full birth team.
Whatever your choices, we ensure you are well-informed about the risks and benefits of each birthing scenario, empowering you to make the best decisions for your family’s needs. Choose Panhandle Birth Services for a supportive, personalized, and empowering birth experience in the Texas Panhandle.
Midwife Sandra Elkins
LM, CPM, RN
After the birth of her daughter and recognizing the need for change in birth settings, Sandra enrolled at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse. Her goal was to make a difference in the lives of mothers. After 13 years and four more children, Sandra felt called to midwifery. She began by attending home births with a local midwife while completing a self-study program. When she was six months pregnant with her youngest son, she moved to El Paso, Texas.
In El Paso, Sandra completed an internship at Casa de Nacimiento. After finishing the program, she became a Certified Professional Midwife in 2001. In 2024, she will be celebrating 23 years as a CPM, 22 years as a Texas Licensed Midwife, and 15 years as a Registered Nurse.
While she acknowledges the significant responsibility, Sandra knows what an honor it is to be entrusted with this beautiful life event. She has always approached birthing services as a labor of love, having assisted in approximately 400 births as the primary midwife.
